О чём вы думаете, когда слышите слово «инвалид»? Большинство скривит лицо. У нас часто ставят знак равенства между инвалидами, нищими, юродивыми и…даже алкоголиками. Инвалиды в массовом сознании россиян - это люди, которые умирают для общества ещё при жизни. Можно слышать риторический вопрос: «Что может быть хуже, чем стать инвалидом?» Люди 3 раза плюют через плечо, ведь краешком сознания понимают: инвалидом может стать каждый. Брезгливость или жалость – вот чем встречают сегодня человека с ограниченными физическими возможностями обыватели.
Why Paralympics are so important for Russia? Because here majority of people believe that disabled person = beggar = whacky = monster = junkie or alcoholic. In mass consciousness disabled people are those who died being alive. We often say: "What can be worse than be an invalid?". Disgust or -in a better case - pity - that's what people here normally feel for disabled when they meet them.
